It’s the End of the World

…as he knows it, anyway.

He wanted me to give him a dog treat so he could “give” it to Molly. Actually, he would have run around with it, having Molly chase him, until he eventually put it in his mouth. Yuck. So this is the tantrum I received when I said “no.”

He’s a good toddler in general, but like any two year old, he is a bit rough around the edges. I’ll have these pictures to look back on in the coming years when he tries to convince me of what a perfect child he was…and because I’ll probably only remember the good times and be inclined to agree without photographic evidence.

Snowy Day Pictures

We have been getting snow since before I woke up this morning! The snow is as high as a dog’s belly this afternoon. The boys and I are staying warm inside playing with blocks and trucks and all kinds of toys. Here are a few pictures from our morning.

Timothy grins for the camera. If you peer into the darkness beyond, you will see the results of his dumping his toybox all out. Again. He would rather play in the box than with the toys inside it sometimes. But that’s a two year old for you!

Nathaniel shows off those big hazel eyes. He spent much of the rest of picture time trying to grab the camera from my hands. He’s really starting to be interested in the electronics that we use everyday.

Timothy was busy building with blocks on the table, a favorite passtime. He also likes to form them into “trains” of lined up blocks and carefully drive them across the table. He has quite an imagination!

“Mommy, did you see all that snow out there?” He is fascinated with the world outside our window, and spends much of his time standing and looking out the window. He loves being outdoors, but this cold snowy day would have to be observed from inside.

Timothy and the Vacuum

Timothy found something new in his room the other day. I was helping with the cleaning and left the vacuum in Timothy’s room for just a minute and when I returned I saw this.

Timothy says “Hey guys, look at what I found!”

“This requires further study…”

“It has wheels like a truck, but it has a funny looking cord. Interesting…”

“Let’s see what I can plug it in to.” (I know, I know, he ended a sentence with a preposition – we’ve been working on his grammar with him, but he’s not even two yet)

“Hmmm, this cord is short.”

“Let’s try the gate.”

“No. Maybe the doorknob…”

“No, that wasn’t it either. My chest, perhaps?”

“Of course not. The chest – what was I thinking?!? Now, let’s examine this plug a little closer…”

“Eureka! The foot!”

“Oh, I give up. Mama! Help me!!!”

“I plug it in where?!? The wall? Now I’ve heard everything…”

Me and Nathaniel

Here are some pictures of me and the boys (and Molly) on the couch. Often when I come home from work I will take Nathaniel from Erin and sit on the couch with him. Timothy likes to join us – sometimes trying to sit on my lap with Nathaniel, other times sitting next to Nathaniel and me.

The boys and animals

Timothy loves animals. He plays with our dog, Molly, far longer than is matched by her interest. He watches birds outside our house. He also loves to read books about animals–Touch and Feel Farm is a long-time favorite, and Petting Farm is a wonderful new addition. The Petting Farm book came with a DVD, and this has been incredible. It’s a simple concept which is perfect for him. The narrator introduces segments featuring different animals, and children on the DVD talk about what the animals are doing, what a particular baby animal is called (such as horse/foal), and other general tidbits about the current animal. I love watching this with him and teaching him different animal names and sounds. He can make the sounds for dogs (his first animal sound, and still the default when he doesn’t know the answer), horses, sheep, baby chicks, and frogs (which aren’t in the DVD but which we have stuffed versions of all over the house). Of course, sometimes he resembles a broken see-n-say: “Timothy, what does the pig say?” “Woof woof!” “What does the duck say?” “Woof woof!” He’s very entertaining, and always proud of himself as we also are of him.

Nathaniel is just starting to become interested in Molly, and is going through the process of pulling her fur, smacking her nose, and pushing her face away when she tries to clean him. Poor Molly put up with this from Timothy for several months when he was younger, and she is handling Nathaniel’s attentions with the same long-suffering gentleness. We were able to teach Timothy how to be gentle with her, and we are grateful that she is putting up with Nathaniel’s attentions until he learns gentleness, too.

Timothy’s Visit to the Hospital

Patrick woke up very early this morning to take Timothy to Primary Children’s Hospital for his echo cardiogram today. They arrived at about 7:00 am, and waited a few minutes for the cardiology department to open for the morning. After taking his weight and doing a cursory exam, then turned out the lights in the exam room and used a fiber optic light to look at the veins in his hand. It worked, they got the IV in on the first try! He cried a little, but took it like a trooper. They then moved to another dark room where the sedatives were administered, and the echo was performed. They gave him enough to make him groggy, but did not completely put him to sleep. He did start to wake up more a few times during the exam, and they administered a few more doses of sedative to keep him still. After about thirty minutes, he went to recovery, where he woke up quickly and did not want to be held! Patrick tried to let him sit up for a couple of seconds at a time to readjust his grip on Timothy, and he would get a little woozy and have trouble staying up, but was very awake for the most part. They moved to ANOTHER room and were told that the doctor would be able to read the results and let them know in just a little while. That was a relief since we had been told it would be a separate visit. The doctor came in and said that it was just what he had suspected, that there was a narrowing in his pulmonary artery, causing noise, but that he would grow out of it. Praise God! We are so incredibly relieved.

Timothy did get to eat a little after being denied breakfast before the test, then came home and ate some bread with cream cheese (one of his favorites). He (and his brother) then took a huge nap for about 3 1/2 hours! It was a relaxing finish to a stressful day.

I am grateful for all the prayers that we have received during this time of concern about Timothy’s health. I know that God strengthened us and helped Timothy handle all the discomfort of the testing, as well as bringing about such a great outcome. Other children have to spend much more time visiting cardiologists and other specialists, and we are blessed to have two healthy boys. I hope Abbey doesn’t mind that I am stealing a topic of hers from a few days ago, but please consider donating to/volunteering at a local children’s hospital in your area. These facilities provide excellent care to children from families of all income levels, and they need all the support they can get to continue to do so. One easy way for federal employees to give is to donate to your local children’s hospital through CFC. Others may check to see if your employer will match your gift.

I voted for John McCain and Sarah Palin today. There was no line, and the poll workers were a few decades younger on average than usual! Now I just have to bide my time until the elections results come in tonight. Obviously, I have to be an optimist to believe that McCain/Palin could win, and I have decided to be optimistic today. Only time will tell if that is foolish, but I would rather be hopeful than not.

Updating other news about the family, Nathaniel is still stuck in a cranky cycle, but Timothy is settling in better with the time change. He actually wasn’t hungry until lunch, and now he is down for a nap, though only time will tell if he actually takes one! Now I’m settling in to watch election news, all of which is meaningless until tonight. Oh, well…it makes me happy!

Church today…or not

We got up (early, thanks to the kids and the time change) and went to church this morning. Everything was fine through the announcements, then Nathaniel started screaming (in nursery) and wouldn’t stop. I held him for some time, and tried to feed him, and he would settle for a while, then go back to fussing. Patrick stayed in the service until the Lord’s Table, then we gathered up the kids and had to leave. I was sad doing that, but it was obvious that Nathaniel wasn’t going to be happy even if he was being held constantly, so we decided not to put all the other kids and the nursery volunteer through that.

After we got home, the boys napped, and we moved my computer to the living room. Big fun! Now I can check email while the kids are running around, since the office is not a baby-proofed place right now.

We’re getting ready for Timothy’s big day on Wednesday. He will have an echo cardiogram, during which he will be sedated. Unfortunately, I was unable to find anyone to watch Nathaniel while this is happening, so I will be staying home with him while Patrick takes Timothy down to the doctor. I’m pretty sad about this, but I’m looking forward to hearing from Patrick as soon as the test is over, and I’ll try to talk to my groggy boy over the phone if I can. I’ll just want to hold him, so it will be difficult, but he loves his Dada, and his Dada will make sure everything is okay.

Unlike Chrissie, my photos are decidedly not well-organized, so I sort of counted the picture folders on the server until I came to the fourth one, which definitely did not have sub-folders! In this picture from January, Timothy is crawling around in our office, navigating between the playpen, the high chair, and his musical table, and taking time out to look cute for the camera.

I’m going to tag Elisa for this meme, and I’m saving the one she tagged me for until I can think of enough strange facts about me. You’d think that would be easier! I suppose I made a mistake as to what I was tagged for. Good thing Elisa pointed that out!

Timothy’s belated 18 month checkup

Timothy saw his pediatrician yesterday. Have I mentioned that we really like her? Anyway, as we already suspected, he is REALLY TALL! He is definitely off the chart on height; actually, he is further off the chart than he was last time! For the most part, he is doing really well.

The doctor did have one concern. He has had a benign heart murmur since birth, and nothing she has heard so far made her concerned. Unfortunately, she thinks she heard something mildly concerning this time, so we are going to take him to a specialist to get him checked out. This isn’t an emergency, and probably isn’t anything serious. He was definitely wiggling around during her exam, and she listened to his chest three separate times just to see if she was actually hearing what she thought she heard. Unfortunately, she couldn’t positively rule out a problem, so he has an appointment on October 27 to be evaluated by a cardiologist down at the children’s hospital in Salt Lake City. We would appreciate your prayers for him.

Other than that, he is doing really well! I’ll post the stats at the end, just to be like my dear sister.

Timothy’s height: 36 inches (91.44 cm)

Timothy’s weight: 30 pounds 15 ounces (14.03 kg)
